Is it good to change research direction? If yes, then how can the change in research direction help advance scientific careers?
did you mean changing the area of research? i think it is best way to advance the scientific career provided they are somehow related. For example once getting a specialization in organic chemistry if one desire to enter in biochemistry then it would be very cool . Organist chemists are very successful when they enter in biochemistry. Similar thing could be true for a biophysicist. According to me, if somebody change there research goal post, they should keep in mind that there previous experience do no go in vain. An organic Synthetic organic chemist could handle the problem of drug design very effectively. but switching field to an entirely different area may not be a smart move (unless you have a god gifted brain). One extreme case i have seen is changing field from plant biology to civil engineering and then to chemical engineering. The example mentioned beforehand is hilarious and did not make sense.
