I know that in tissue engineering by using stem cells and scaffold we can make an organ to renew itself or cure its damaged part. Is it true that while working with stem cells and scaffolds, if appropriate conditions are not observed, the stem cells which are used in the heart might turn to a different organs stem cell and create a different organ? For example a bone?
It is possible. For example, in my PhD lab it was shown that when stem cells in collagen gels were used to repair patellar tendon defects, 28% of the tendons showed ectopic bone formation.
