The definition in the neurological field, is that Alzheimer`s disease is a common non-reversible cause of dementia, so actually there`s no difference between each other.

Dementia is loss of cognitive functioning; you can say that it is the preliminary/ initial stage of nuerodegeneration whereas Alzhiemer disease is the terminal stage of progression and nowadays it is also referred as Type 3 Diabetes because brain cells didn't get enough glucose for brain functioning due to insulin resistance.
