The goal is to increase the surface roughness of 316L stainless steel fibers to improve the results of coating by sol gel process.

A lot of sources suggest etching in boiling acid mixture containing oxalic acid, hydrochloric acid and sulphuric acid or electrochemical etching in 90% oxalic acid solution. These techniques require quite a lot of preparation and they are rather dangerous.

Is it possible to etch 316L stainless steel in 98% oxalic acid by dipping without applying heat or voltage?
