There are some important experiences in Latin America, that you may take a look if you are debating participatory design from a political perspective, relating architects and communities. Unfortunately, most of the references are written in Portuguese or Spanish. I suggest below what I could find in English -- I hopeI they contribute with yout research.

Haven't read it yet but I am curious about this book: Hamdi, Nabeel, Housing WIthout Houses: Participation, Flexibility, Enablement (London: Intermediate Technology, 1995). I would also look up these two:
