through out my training I have seen continuous feed in icu critically ill patient. But normally we human beings don't eat all the time and especially at night time. Why don't we just bolus feed or feed in day at higher rate ?
Dear Dr. Sharma, in our ICU, we have some continuous feeding devices, but we prefer boluses. Boluses are given manually with care, instantly observed by the caregivers, we give 8-10 feeds within the period of 0700 to 2200 hours. We use the continuous one in a very few instances, but chances of micro-aspiration is more. Thanks- Rabiul.
In the pediatric ICU settings, continuous feeding by nasogastric tube (NGT) is the most common way to reintroduce the feeding once the child is stabilized, and once reached the full feeding amount the child is shifted to bolus NGT feeds or oral diet.
