My student is seeking whether a coach's leadership style (via several likert-type questions) is related to (a) perceived communiation competence (likert-type questions) and (b) student athlete motivation to perform (several likert-type questions). What would be the best way to measure these relationships?

Are you comparing several coaches? Have you considered quantifying the percentage of responses from each point on your Likert scale (e.g. insufficient to sufficient) and comparing the coaches through analysis of variance and multiple t tests? Do you believe it fits in your methodology? Let me know.

From what I understand in your question, I believe regression analysis is the statistical tool to discover the relationship between a coach's leadership style and student athlete motivation.
As all the scales are Likert in nature you can use regression by summating the scale items. You can also use SEM by modeling your variables.
