Please note that I am an inspection engineer and would like your views/ opinion on the following -

We have experienced severe metal wastage and tube failure in a heat exchanger with SS304 tubes. The operating temperatures are Shell side (In- 280 deg. C, Out- 430 deg. C) & Tube Side (In- 650 deg. C, Out- 450 deg. C). The gas composition is

Shell Side - SO2-11%, O2- 8%, N2-72% & CO2-9%

Tube Side - SO2-4%, SO3-7.5%,N2-74%, O-5.5%, CO2-9%

We have established that the metal wastage and tube rupture was due to hot sulfidation .I would like to have your advise on the choice of upgrade. Which metallurgy do you think will suit our process conditions and provide maximum resistance against the damage mechanism.

I am thinking of upgrading to SS310. Due to higher Cr content the life will be prolonged.
