We are looking to purchase an automated chromatagraph (silica gel) in the cost range of up to 50K. We do a lot of small scale screening reactions and synthetic work and have no idea about good systems on the market. What is your favorite system? We are looking for low cost/ low maintenance / good performance-(separation and analysis)
We are wanting reusable cartridges as well

Most of Vendors can offer such a system. You can check Agilent (more expensive), Knauer (less expensive, but very good), Shimatzu or Merck-Hitachi.

You should first establish some criteria to best focus on which systems would offer the features you need (" small scale screening reactions and synthetic work" is far too general a description. Focus on example applications. Be specific). Gather some product literature from the local instrument vendors, consider the training that will be needed by the users and then have an experienced chromatographer who is familiar with your needs help you make an informed decision.

one thing - independently what the sales representative will suggest (UV or PDA detector) find funds and buy a refractive index detector as a second detector.
Sooner or later it will be useful for you.

I assume your reaction mixture is non-polar (doesn’t use water), thus you will be using normal phase (NP) which uses Hexane and Dichloromethane (DCM) as a mobile phase (IPA too!). Use about 1% water in your Hexane in order to saturate it and thus lock your retention times. I would use MS as the 1st detector and UV/PDA/DAD as the 2nd detector. Use a generic 5 cm silica column.

I agree with Markus! Remember, an RID (refractive index detector) cannot perform during a gradient run (changing the mobile phase composition during a chromatographic run).
Also remember most NP solvents cannot donate a proton (the ESI/MS process involves protonation, fragmentation, then detection), which means you cannot use ESI for your MS. You might be able to use TOF for the unprotonated neutral molecules.
Bruce, you most certainly can use NP solvents with an ESI (MS). BTW: The drying gas is pure nitrogen for safety. I have personally run thousands of NP methods with HPLC-ESI-MS analysis under such conditions in both ESI positive and negative modes. While NP solvents do suppress ionization, residual water in the solvents plus any adducts (free metals) help to provide good signal with most compounds. When better sensitivity is needed we simply use adducts or doping agents (same as with RP mobile phases using ESI) either added to the mobile phase or post column (as an infusion). No worries.
Let me know what you are looking at in the way of equipment and i will suggest that which may work the best.
Factory automation systems by Mitsubishi Electric , India is economically and result point of view is good one.
Although your 50k is not defined, I suggest you request for used equipment that are rugged and economical.
