Yes! definitely. The hydroxyl radical is the key oxidising agent in most of the advanced oxidation processes such as Fenton-oxidation, Fenton-like oxidation, Photo-fenton, Solar Photo fenton etc. The oxidation potential of OH radical vary with the pH of the solution and give best results in the acidic pH range of 2.5 to 4.
In our research group we work with ozone, and we have the idea based on reports in the literature, that under basic conditions the process works much better in the production of hydroxyl radicals. Now, based on the activity of the hydroxyl radical as a function of pH, it could explain the promising results of the Fenton process in industrial applications (one of several advantages) over other AOPs.
