I have read quite a bit of literature and I found that while synthesizing Fe3O4 nanoparticles, people have chosen different solvents mainly based on their boiling point to favor nucleation or growth. But, how the solvent is chosen in accordance to the iron precursor (iron oleate, Iron acetylacetonate, iron pentacarbonyl etc.) What is the relation between those two because I have seen people use phenyl ether, benzyl ether, hexadecene, erucic acid etc. but WHY?

Some references regarding this issue will be very helpful.
