Hey all, so we have some tick histology sections stained with H & E and are trying to identify Babesia/Theileria in salivary glands and gut. Currently we do not have an option to do PCR to confirm infections in ticks but we do know that the hosts are infected (and it is a host specific tick). Can someone help to identify what might be normal/ abnormal in the salivary glands?

All the best for you. Firstly, i think you are already know the tick is now infected after feeding on the source host. Secondly, could you upload your pics to try to answer you.

Kindly, tell me the tick species you did use and the host they were feeding on..because, i think yes, it's abnormal..
It's an Ixodes tick and the hosts are birds. That's about all I can say...

regarding to the salivary glands, i think it's infected with Babesia microti in the morulae stage. the photo of the gut, i think it may be infected with Theileria parva.. because Ixodes spp. could be multi-infected tick species
