Reports showed that, since the discovery of some resistant isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae against sulfanomide in 1930s, wide spread resistance was also reported in the last 80 years for the following antimicrobial agents; penicillin, tetracycline, fluoroquinolones, cephalosporins and recently to azithromycin. Since 2015, Ceftriaxone plus Azithromycine is the only recommended treatment for treating infections associated with N. gonorrhoeae in most countries.
