Currently working with adults survivors of child abuse (mainly incest victims), I would like to assess the global psychological distress of these people. It will be an online assessment that will combine other scales. I am wondering if the SCL-90R is really appropriate because of its lenght and its heaviness.
Have you ever used it? If so, what was the reaction of your population?

I have used SCL-90 in a sample of individuals with SUD and mental disorders, is highly acceptable as clinical assessment may be composed of many more questions. Most of the times individuals take about 20-30 minutes to complete it.
I have used the SCL-90-R (printed on paper) in a small population of people with an acquired brain injury and their healthy spouses, as part of a pilot study. Everyone found the list easy to understand and to complete. 90 items seem long, especially when combined with other scales. But the items are short and both the instruction and response scale are the same for every item, making it easy to complete.
I have no experience with your population. If you are worried about the length for your specific population, you might consider using the short version of the SCL-90, the SCL-25. Or a different list, such as the DASS-21, K10, or Distress Thermometer. But the SCL-90 obviously provides the most information and might be the most appropriate measure to use with your population, since it does not only measure mood but also other complaints/sources of distress which might be relevant.

The Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI; Derogatis, 1975) is a 53-item version of the SCL-R-90 measuring the same factors and consisting of those items with the highest loadings in a factor analysis.
There is even an 18-item (Derogatis, 2001) that I attach. It measures three of the most reliable subscales and not all 8 included in the SCL-90: depression, anxiety and somatization.

Thank you very much for all your answers. As I don't know any of the questionnaires you suggested so I will take a look at each of them. As I am working with a population of french-speaking people I will need to check if there is a validated translation.
If not, I think that using the SCL90-R is stil a pretty good option to consider.

I've used polish version of SCL-27plus as a screening tool for general distress/psychopathology in a study concerning patients with schizophrenia. It consists of 5 subscales: depressive, vegetative, agoraphobic, sociophobic symptoms and pain. It has also screening questions for suicidality. Would recommend ;)

We used the German version of the BSI-18 that also had rather good psychometric properties and I would recommend having a look at that one unless you absolutely would like all the SCL-90 items. As far as I know, a French version is available.

The french version of the SCL 90 is validated; though it has some shortcomings (especially the psychosis scale which may produce false positives) it is a quite convenient instruments for screening in clinical practice.
Hi Maire-Anaise, if you are concerned about the length of the SCL-90R you could consider the short form: BSI. It has excellent psychometric properties and there are lots of normative studies available for comparison.
