I am looking for information about precipitation hardening/ageing of die casting alloys identical with or related to ANSI/SAE 385.0 - according to specification, this alloys should contain
11-13 wt.-% Si
2 wt.-% Fe
2 to 4 wt.-% Cu
0.5 wt.-% Mn
0.3 wt.-% Mg
0.5 wt.-% Ni
3 wt.-% Zn
0.3 wt.-% Sn
max. 0.5 wt.-% of other, unspecified elements.
Information about achievable mechanical properties depending on condition/state would also be of interest.

From my practice, your alloy is related to secondary type, hence, most elements do not contribute to ageing response but necessary for applying as far as more scrap material. When considering age hardening, T5 treatment is commonly applied. Al2Cu, Al5Cu2Mg8Si6 phases may perform as strengthening precipitates. It is highly supposed the properties are very similar to those of ADC12 type alloys, far popular in the literature (e.g. see the paper attached)

thanks for your response, indeed, ADC12 looks similar - however, one immediate, additional question, what do you make about the much higher Zn content in 385.0?

Dirk Lehmhus Zn is not a must, but rationally increases sustainability by widening appropriate scrap materials. Regarding its influence, Zn content seems to be high (compared to ADC12), but too low in comparison to age-hardenable Al-Zn-Mg alloys for example. So that a well known Zn-bearing strengthening phases MgZn2 or Al2Mg3Zn3 will not precipitate since negligible Mg. Moreover, the latter is totally bind into Al5Cu2Mg8Si6 phase. Hence, Zn remains in solid solution after casting and after ageing indeed with negligible contribution to strength because of low lattice distortion.
