Art market is not the only "market" that an artist can deal with. We must train our students within the creative industries' context, the art market and also the social pratice that may envolve the broad field of Arts
I believe that we should make the students aware of the idiosyncrasies and fickle nature of the art market and how it works but we must be careful that we do not steer them towards making art according to the desires of the art market. Each student must decide for themselves whether they are going to make art that is tailored to the market or art that is honest to themselves and their personal passions. Of course the latter group must have patience, determination and self-belief if they do not tick both of these boxes.
That's my point Mats, if students are led down this road it is doomed to failure, either because they are creating art to please others or because they will always be one step behind where they wish to be. I would always advise them to follow their passion and be honest to themselves but in today's society there is great pressure to be commercially successful. The pressure comes from parents, senior managers, quality control departments etc.
I am puzzled by the question of how can an art student learn to develop an attitude towards the art market.
If art is status linked - and galeries and critics are "streamlined" by it.
So be it!
But students have to understand the art market mechanisms because sooner or later they have to deal with them.
- If they want to get in buseness
- or if they precisely want to know how to escape art market mechanisms
to go with the current or agains it - to discide consciously which way to go.
(and here indeed the "nested variables" of the student's social background come into play - that's why schools are for - to mediate)

Art school is to prepare and assist students in developing a sustainable practice that will make him professionally useful for Art market career within the creative industries as a result art school had been existence before art market
MoMA Curator Laura Hoptman : "I’ve always wanted to be around artists. I’m a fan. It’s the artists who have told me who is interesting for pretty much my entire career. Elizabeth Peyton told me about Kai Althoff, and my husband told me about Elizabeth Peyton. Elizabeth introduced me to Laura Owens, too—I have to give her that. Gabriel Orozco told me about Luc Tuymans. Chris Ofili told me about Tomma Abts. Mark Grotjahn told me about Mary Weatherford. Artists are my secret weapon, which I happily tell to everybody that I know."
