I did my research project on the assumption that the neuroma would somehow be influenced by the presence or absence of the communicating branch. My sample was only 40 cadavers, but there was no apparent link that we found in that sample group. I would be very interested in pursuing this further.

I am attaching my research article pertaining to the communicating branch. It was traditionally thought that the lateral plantar nerve supplied a communicating branch between the 4th to the 3rd plantar interdigital nerve (which is derived from the medial plantar nerve). There are many anatomy atlases - some include the communicating branch and some don't. However, the earlier literature described the high incidence of Morton's neuroma in the 3rd interdigital nerve as being possibly influenced by the presence of the communicating branch. More importantly, they looked for this as a cause for "recurrence" of the symptoms after neurotomy. I argue that Morton's neuroma is due more to the biomechanical issues in the mid and forefoot. The presence of the communicating branch may have some influence, but in my study the one neuroma that was observed was in a cadaver with no communicating branch. Coincidence?
