Some researcher behave much differently in both conditions. Out of the lab they are very cheerful and friendly, but in the lab they are nightmare to meet with.
With Profs. Abdalla and Hatem, I stay the same in the workplace (in my case, the library or archive) or outside it. In fact, I try to put all my personality into my work, however objective, and all my personality into activity outside work. So everything I do I try to stamp with the same style. Whoever knows me will recognize it.
Thanks for sharing the question. I am in perfect agreement with the previous contributors.
My opinion is, work place and personal life outside work place actually demand two different attitudes for the sake of individual profession and we behave accordingly.
But the basic humanities, core values, morals and ethics should be preserved in both lives.
We can relax out of the lab and can have fun but everything demand seriousness in the laboratory. Its not the personality that changes but the attitude.
Generally behavior of individual remains same inside and outside the lab. But some time it may happens that one become exhausted in his lab so his behavior changes accordingly.
Also inside the lab you should have to behave in professional way but outside the lab, there is no such type of restriction.
The researcher is a human being who comes to work from home, brings a certain mood with, that reflects the behavior in the laboratory. Also, when you're out of the lab, you're with your thoughts, whether satisfied or not, and this must be reflected in your behavior in the family, in society, and so on. Therefore, these behaviors can not be strictly separated and they are interdependent!
When you are in a responsible position in the lab, you need to have dual personality between in and out the lab, but this doesn't cancel or erase being a human
One thing that I can conclude here is that it is not the personality that changes in and out of the laboratory. It is our passion and seriousness towards labwork that somehow reflect in our attitude in the lab.
I believe, people are in a very different mood in the lab, under some stress of work, wanting to complete planned work and get results or maybe wanting to get things done, but outside, they are comparatively mentally free, so the difference may be observed!
