Humans have been over-exploiting Earth's resources for the past two centuries, especially in the last one... The effects of this bad use of the resources and our production model based on consumerism will still be producing impacts on the environment for thousands of years -even after human extinction. 

Being realistic, we cannot restore our ecological balance, not anymore. If action was taken now, not only states but individuals, and we changed completely our lifestyle to protect our environment, consequences would still be inevitable, although, we would be ensuring a not-as-bad future for next generations.

There is no doubt today that a major dimension of the present multidimensional crisis, which extends to the economic, political, cultural and general social level, is the ecological crisis.  The upsetting of ecological systems, the widespread pollution, the threat to renewable resources, as well as the running out of non-renewable resources and, in general, the rapid downgrading of the environment and the quality of life have made the ecological implications of economic growth manifestly apparent in the past  years.

By contrast to the focus on wild places, relatively little attention has been paid to the built environment, although this is the one in which most people spend most of their time.Ecosystem destruction is already happening.

Humans destroy ecosystems. Our lifestyle creates pollution and we overuse our natural resources. Today,  We build roads, hunt animals, cut down trees destroying forests and just litter the planet . We waste resources that are not infinite and will soon run out, if we continue our practice.

Certainly, we have crossed our boundaries... we have far crossed our means (that is, if our means secure our sustainable living). The indications around the world are plenty.... hunger, poverty, scarcity of water, climate change, droughts, ocean deterioration, mountains cutting, soil erosion, desertification, frequent tornadoes & hurricanes... you name it... it's all there & increasing!!!!!! Our future is unfortunately: GLOOMY.

Based upon an extrapolation of LCA analyses, it is becoming increasingly clear that every human product, event and activity has a negative environmental impact and contributes to the global loss of biodiversity ... so don't ever do anything that is not directly related to human survival ... I have read a lot and think about planetary boundaries - the works of scientists of Stockholm Resilience Centre , like  Johan Rockström  and other scientists for quite a number of years. We have to sensitize  more and more members of scientific community and all other concerned circles. First of all, try to understand the limitations imposed by the Second Law of Thermodynamics on all we make - remember energy is always required to implement changes, make things, etc. Second, as you can't beat the Second Law, try to dribble it  on energy manipulation - dissipating heat/increasing entropy at rates as low as possible.

I am in support of Mikel Cody Evans. We need to live within our biocapacity. The first step will be to calculate our ecological footprint base on indicators like mobility, food, waste, housing, energy, purchase and water. This will provide 'state of the art' result that enable us to identify the factors or point of actions to engage in reducing our footprint. Different scenarios and reduction limit can be set (say 10%). A plan of action can be laid out to implement the appropriate actions that are geared towards reducing our ecological footprint.
