Highly-processed foods contain a variety of additives to engineer their flavor, color, and texture. Are these foods bad for health? Are there any unbiased, bona fide publications on the subject?
Ultraprocessed foods were associated with a 12% higher risk for overall cancer, and an 11% increased risk of breast cancer for every 10% increment in consumption. (BMJ study).
Ultra-processed products refer to processing of substances derived from foods by e.g. baking, frying, extruding, moulding, re-shaping, hydrogenationand hydrolysis. They generally include a large number of additives such as preservatives, sweeteners, sensory enhancers, colorants, flavours and processing aids, but little or no whole food. They may be fortified with micronutrients. The aim is to create durable, convenient and palatable ready-to-eat or ready-to-heat food products suitable to be consumed as snacks or to replace freshly prepared food-based dishes and meals.
Looking into all these artificial chemicals additives being used, it will obviously be bad for our health.
Best to avoid them so go for organic and fresh produces.
