The named species are facultative pathogenic, i.e. they are virulent and can cause infection, although certain host factors are required (immune suppression, breakdown of barrier functions, etc.). “Type strain” says nothing about the ability of that particular isolate to cause infections. But if you go to the description of a type species you usually find information about the origin of that particular strain (whether it comes from an infection or not). Staphylococcus aureus subs. anaerobicus ATCC 35844, for instance, has been isolated of an “abscess of young sheep” (http://bacdive.dsmz.de/index.php?search=dsm%2020714).
In general, when working in a lab with highly enriched number of bacteria, be extremely cautious and handle your cultures as being infectious agents!
