I am currently working on MEG data from patients with GPi and STN DBS. All connectivity studies including ours can find prominent theta connectivity between the temporal lobe and the basal ganglia structures. Theta is the most prominent hippocampal rhythm.

We know that every neuron in the brain does not isolated. Every neuron is connected to the other neuron through one or many synapses. By conditioning processes, like in Pavlov experiment, the association of stimuli in our mind can activate the association of neuron circuits in the brain that firstly are not active.. Every time we receive many informations from our sensory receptors that must be associated in our mind and then activate the association of some neuron circuits in our brain. So, by learning processes, some days the the circuits of neurons that connected the hippocampus and basal ganglia that firstly are not active can be activated.
Repeating association process in the mind (conditioning processes) make sensitization and plasticity of the synapses and then non active circuit become active.
Your study sounds very interesting. I dont know if there are any DTI and/ or fibre tracking studies of this region but it would be highly interesting to back your findings with such analyses. This is pretty easy done if you have access to a scanner.
Hi, Wolf-Julian!Sorry I couldn't answer earlier.Theta rhythm directly depends from the cholinergic projection neurons of cholinergic nuclei of the basal forebrain (look for Vinogradova OS) namely the medial septum and of some other close located to septum cholinergic nuclei. Don't mix with striatum (the caudate nucleus and others near one). Existence of these communications is in detail described in immunocytochemistry literature since 80th years and above (look for Mesulam MM, Saper CB, Salvaterra PM, Woolf N and others). I just wanted to let you know that the respective study has been published. We are now working on a task that implicates both structures to see whether we can relate the Theta activity of the basal ganglia with the one in the Hippocampus.
