I've had some success with darkening steels using MnO additions to passivation baths, but these were mainly done on Zn coatings. It may be worth trying. I've also explored an old patinating method called Rokusho with some modifications (Subbing out Cu for Zn cations) with good effects.

None of these were tried on electroless nickel though.
