I am working on Iranian Domes. There are many double-shell domes in Iran. I know that making double-shell dome helps heat insulation, but I wonder if there is any structural benefit of making double-shell dome. Could you provide some reference?
Obviously , The Double skin Shell Dome helps heat Insulation and also Lot of Benefits with respect to During Design phase have to consider the huge structural support of member compare to Shell Dome Structures.
If you are contact Mott MacDonald you can collect lot of shell structure in Iran & near your area also because they Done lot of Design the shell dome structures
One of the reasons could be related to thrust forces in the dome. this type of domes, work like Gothic arches. This means that, Like the heavy flying buttress and pinnacle at the foot of the Gothic arches, the upper shell, with the infliction of great vertical forces, could compensate the thrust forces of lower shell.
Dear Ponkumar, how is that huge structural support?
Dear Soudabeh, are these two domes connected somehow or are they independent? because, you know, gravitational forces can't travel where there is no matter.
The Shells of double shell domes in iranian architecture could have three position to each: Two continuous shells, Semi continuous shells, and Entirely separated (attached figures). in first type of domes, like Goy Masjid (Goy Mosque) in Tabriz or Sheikh Lotfollah in Isfahan, In the upper part of the dome are separated. The second type, like dome of Ardestan Mosque, the shells just connected together to 22.5 degree from foot of dome. at third type, the shells are completely separate from each other and intersect only at the foot of the dome together, and distance of shells are very various (from centimeters in Soltanieh dome to meters in Imam Mosque or in Imam Reza Haram).
an interesting historical reference could be the Brunelleschi Dome in Florence. Here there is a funny and simple video in which you can find out how it works! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IOPlGPQPuM
