Intercalating dyes react preferentially with double-strAndes nuclei acids, thus the strong signal with DNA. However, they also interact with ds RNA structures, such as the numerous hairpins present in ribosomal RNA.
As mentioned above, yes, EtBr and acridine orange can be used to stain RNA as well as DNA. Keep in mind that these stains are not specific to RNA or DNA, they are generalists for any dsRNA or dsDNA. If you have a mixed sample (both DNA and RNA) both will be stained.
