this is a interesting question. In former lignite mining areas in eastern Germany are formed many opencast mining lakes. The water in the most opencast mining lakes are very acid. In the north of the city of Leipzig some of rivers (Mulde, Weiße Elster, etc.) flow into the opencast mining lakes, that means that the water will generally favorable for fish and therefore for salmons. We have released Atlantic salmon in a stream and changed the downstream part of it after the fish migrated to sea. We have also released salmon in the ocean and in a heavily modified stream ( e.g. Hansen et al. 1993; Hansen & Jonsson 1990, 1994). In the case where we changed the outlet, the salmon returned to the old outlet after having fed in the ocean for one year, not to the new outlet where the water came out. In the second case, fish returned to the place in the ocean where released, and from there moved to nearby rivers, not to the river of origin. Salmon also return to the heavily modified River Akerselva in Oslo, when released there (Hansen & Jonsson 1990). Thus, there should be no problem releasing salmon in a man-made river as long as environmental conditions for salmon are suitable. They should migrate to sea and return when adult. Whether they will survive in the stream depends on water quality, substrate, competitors and predators (handling and diseases included).
