I want to do experiments on animals and I need to write a protocol following guidelines similar to SPIRIT but for animals. Do such guidelines currently exist?
Guidelines and regulations for use and care of animals in research, teaching, transport, exhibition, etc., depend on the particular country in question. In the U.S., the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) appears to be the only U.S. federal law that concerns the use animals in research. Enforcing the AWA is in the domain of the USDA (the U.S. Department of Agriculture).
Your university could have an institutional committee with guidelines for the humane use and protection of experimental animals.
