There is study by Rinn et al. (1996) on the comparison between drill resistance and wood density.
Rinn F., Schweingruber F.H., Schar E. 1996. RESISTOGRAPH and X-ray density charts of wood. Comparative evaluation of drill resistance profiles and X-ray density charts of different wood species. Holzforschung. 50: 303:311
We did at SHR Wageningen the Netherlands a study on the relation between the wood density of meranti and the drilling resistance. The results are not published yet but we find such a high relationship that it was possible to predict the wood density on the basis of a resistance profile.
Many years ago we did the same, measuring on Norway spruce small samples. The correlations were always very high.
In any case I have to add that accurate results can be obtained only at laboratry level, on small samples. If the drilling conditions are not "perfect" and regular Resi and similar tools cannot be considered as measuring systems. On site drillings cannot be considered as real density profiles.
