Hello, My best wishes for your study. Me too working in Phytoplanktons only. You can check algaebase for download many original pdf of books and also, rely on Monographs for each group. Try to establish contacts from other people who are working in ur field from other universities in both India and abroad. Try to collect as much as possible. If you are commonly working for Phytoplanktons then, you need to collect more classical books. Turner,1892, Scott & Prescott, 1961, Croasdale, Gronblad, etc.
There are lot of books and monographs on algae. For your primitive work you should refer I. C. A. R. monographs on algae, Fresh water Algal flora of British Isles, Phytoplanktons of the inland lakes of Wiscinson.
Belatedly, here’s a good general FW guide for N. Am., which covers several trophic levels:
Needham, J.G., and P.R. Needham. 1962. A guide to the study of fresh-water biology. McGraw-Hill. New York. 108 pp. (cf. https://www.questia.com/library/94955879/a-guide-to-the-study-of-fresh-water-biology).
