Dear experts, I am a computer scientist and I know that there is some schemes to perform location-updates/page of mobile users within a cellular network. I would like to know if these schemes are standard (i.e. in all generations) or are specific to each generation ?
Dear Adnan Aijaz, firstly thank you very much for your answer. My concern about the mobility management is from a theory point of view and not a hardware implementation point of view (I can guess that the task of mobility management involves different entities and componenents that differs from one generation to another). Let me explain my self, I know for example that there is several location-update schemes in cellular networks like the never-update scheme, the always-update scheme, the reporting cell schemes, etc. What I want to know sir is: for example taking the reporting cell scheme for the location-update, is it valid and applicable in all generations of cellular networks or is it specific to a given genertation ?.
The same for the paging, I already know that many schemes exist like the blanket polling scheme , shortest-distance-first scheme, etc. Taking one example like the the blanket polling scheme, is it valid and applicable for all generations or is it specific to one and only generation of cellular networks ?.

What Aijaz has written first is very true. But the next statement seems to be too simplified. You can not do anything you like just through software manupulation keeping it independent or transparent to the hardware. Once you commit that a particular mobility management scheme is working in 2G, you need to redesign it entirely to make it working in 3G or LTE or 4G. You need to consider the modulation schemes, multiplexing scheme etc to design the scheme for its applicability in other generation networks which are highly dependent on hardware as well. You need to think of integrity and heterogeneity of the networks for which you want to validate any mobility management scheme.

I feel that it is all about the precision. Improvements in precision.As the hardware technology progress takes place, precision too will improve.So we have to specify the co-ordinates very precisely.

But, with all my respect I saw that Mr. #Asish K Mukhopadhyay might did not understand/read well my second comment. So, in order to be clearer, let me restate it.

sorry, i am not an expert in this field,with my little knowledge i can say the schemes are valid for that particular generation and of course there will be backward compatibility with the new generation with a truncation error in the data.
