I think there are elements of both in RG discussions.
Sometimes a discussion can be a good place to exchange views on difficult or contentious subjects,but equally so,there are times when it allows you to get input on ideas for research that you may have,and to either alter or optimise the work you plan to undertake.
Personally,I've found it very useful for the latter,as I can't say I'm a natural researcher or even a decent one,so getting input and advice has been very helpful.
The other aspect you raise about new areas for reasearch s also true.....often you see a papaer r discussion that opens up the possibilities for something that can be applied to your own field.oi
