I have not considered them as alternative to formal education in universities. In my country University degrees are highly appreciated. Nevertheless, I have suggested them as previous preparation to be clear before investing time and money in Higher Education; as a complement to formal education to have an up-to-date panorama of determned interest areas; or as a way to explore a subject when the interest is not directly professional. Additionally, as my area is language teaching, MOOCs provide great opportunities to improve language while deepening on interesting knowledge.
