Assume we have 5 service blocks in a system that requires the same resource unit. Say service block A and service block B have a service time of 1 minute each. Now I decide to combine these two blocks calling it service block X with a service time of 2 minutes. What should happen to the overall service time of the system? Will it go lower or will it remain the same? and why? Any proof from literature?
My experiment shows that the overall service time reduced.
You have to give more details. Are the two service blocks serial? Since you added the service times together, that appears to be the case. In that case, that most likely will increase the overall service time, unless there is a slack at that step. If there is a big slack at that step, then the service time should stay the same. The service time would only go down if these two are parallel and alternative stations for the step.
Hello Cenk Çalışkan , Thank you for answering the question. The service blocks are all serial. Like, imagine parts coming in for processing and passing thru 5 serial blocks spending 1 minute in each block. No other constraints.
It will stay the same. No proof needed, it's obvious, but you can try it in simulation software - that is a good way to develope intuition about discrete event simulation.
