I know that Cyclodextrins can be broken down by colon bacteria, but what's the metabolsim after injection? I was under the impression that alpha glycosides cannot be eliminated from plasma and are therefore not suited for injection or infusion?

After IV injection cyclodextrin is primarily excreted unchanged in the urine. There is at least one old publication indicating so, but unfortunately I do not recall the authors' names. Cyclodextrin was (and may be still is) used as a vehicle for IV administration of itraconazole in humans. I think the publication is related to this.

2 cyclodextrins are mainly used via parenteral (iv) route: 2-hydroxypropyl betacyclodextrin and sulfobutylether betacyclodextrin, they are considered as safe excipients, used to solubilize poorly soluble drugs, thus giving a good alternative to the use of co-solvents or agressive surfactants. I agree with Amin, these products are excreted rapidly mainly unchanged through glomerular filtration (93-100%) after parenteral administration.
