Academics in the US, at least, are often assumed to be atheists. In fact, when telling people what I do for a living, I have on a few occasions had the person with whom I'm talking ask if I'm an atheist, with the assumption that I must be, since I'm a professor. In my particular case, I confirm their assumption, since I'm an atheist, although I'm always open to being proven wrong. I'm curious about the experiences of other academics in terms of assumptions by non-academics (or even other academics) about spiritual or religious beliefs. I'm also curious about others' thoughts on the extent to which academics usually are atheists, or agnostics, and why that might be the case (or not) if it is true.
