The Science Citation Index (SCI), Art and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI), and the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) are all part of the Web of Science (WoS) core collection.  WoS used to be called the ISI Web of Knowledge, so that is where that term comes from. Journal Citation Reports (JCR) is also produced by Thomson Reuter. It focuses on journals, rather than specific works or scholars, and provides a lot of data about journals – various impact factors, citations, trend data, and so on.

The Master Journal list is the list of all the journals covered in the Web of Science (as well as some other databases as well).  The term “ISI journal” doesn’t really mean anything anymore, since “ISI” was removed when Thomson Reuters changed the name from ISI Web of Knowledge to Web of Science.  But given that, then yes, if a journal is indexed in the WoS than it is what used to be called an ISI journal.

The journal should have been indexed in JCR.

Thank you for your answer, but many ISI journals are not indexed in JCR because very low IF especially in Art and Humanities Citation Index. Based on answer from a staff of Thomson Reuters, the three Citation Indexes from Master Journal List are considered as ISI journals as well as two new Citation Indexes.

As far as I know the journals from Art and Humanity Citation Index do not have any Impact Factor. It is just a list of jurnals that are included. In the JCR you have on the other hand journals with Impact Factor, 5Year Impact Factor and Article Influence Score. It depends more on the topic you are interested in...

Thomson Reuters also operates Journal Citation Reports (JCR), which provides a lot of info, including impact factors, about science and social science journals.  JCR has a Science Edition and a Social Science Edition.  However, JCR only provides journal level info – it does not have info on citations of individual scholars or articles.  For any given year (since 1997, when JCR began), you can search the JCR for a specific journal, or for all the journals within a subject category, or all journals published by a specific publisher, or all journals published in a specific country.  For each journal and year, the JCR includes things like the total number of citations in the journal, the journal impact factor (JIF), the 5-year JIF,trend graphs, journal immediacy index, journal cited half-life, and a lot of other stuff.  JCR does not cover all the journals in the WoS, though.

Both WoS and JCR are part of Thomson Reuters’ Web of Knowledge platform – Web of Knowledge also includes a number of other resources as well, like Medline and Current Contents.

The probem is that which index among different Thomson Reuters indexes must be considered as ISI. Because publishing in ISI jounals is one of the factors inmany countries to accepting PhD students or changing levels of academic members (for example from assistant to associate professor).

In the Thomson Reuter page, Master Journal List, there are three PDF files including SSCI, SCI and AHCI. On the other hand, one can search online to find journals. There are many journals that can be found in the online search system but are not indexed in the three PDF main indexes.

Thus, we don't know that which result should be conssidered as ISI journals, the three indexes or online results. If you have any experience about this subkect, I owuld be so appreciated of you if help me to know more.

All three of the Thomson Reuters indexes are ISI - Basically, ISI was founded by Eugene Garfield and created SCI, SSCI, and AHCI.  Thomson Reuters acquired ISI and it became known as Thomson ISI.  Later the name was changed to the Web of Science.

I think that the answer to your question is that any journal that is indexed in SCI, SSCI, or AHCI is an "ISI Journal."  If you want info on how journals are selected for inclusion in the Web of Science, Thomson Reuters has an explanation on their web page; you can access it here:  http://wokinfo.com/essays/journal-selection-process/

I am also something confused about the difference between ISI and JCR Journals.

For example, J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys. from IOP appears in the journal web site as abstracted, among others, in ISI (Science Citation Index®, SciSearch®, Alerting Services, Current Contents®/Physical, Chemical and Earth Sciences).

Is it an JCR journal or not?

Ernesto - as I understand it, any journal that is indexed in SCI, SSCI, or AHCI is an ISI journal. 

JCR is a separate product offered by Tnomson Reuters. Not every ISI journal is covered by JCR.  I'm not certain how the selection process works but according to the website, JRC covers over 10,800 journals - over 8,400 in the science edition and over 3,000 in the social sciences edition.  Web of Science covers over 12,000 journals in the Core Collection.

To determine if a journal is a JCR journal (or indexed in Web of Science), you can go to their website nad look at the master journal list.  The JCR list is here:

I checked and Journal of Physics D-Applied Physics is on the JCR list, and indexed in SCI.  Hope this helps.

Just to offer one practical view. In Spain every system of priorization for fellowships anc contracts of research is essentially based on journals with impact factor. I you work on matter related with archaeometry you might try to publish in journals that offer this option while hold impact index. If you have old research published in other journals or chapters of book, my advice is to "refresh" that publication with some new data and to publish it even in an abstracted or shorter way on a journal with impact factor. This is specially interesting for research initially not published in english, if you look for a wider audience.

 If you want to publish in impact factor science journals, then check it in the JCR list provided by Thomson Reuters by verifying that "Y" is written in Science column of JCR, which reflects that it has SCI (Science citation index) or SCIE(science citation index expanded) indexing. For social science impact factor  journals, just check, "Y" in last column under "social science" heading in JCR, such journals have SSCI (social science citation index) indexing, which can be checked online by providing journal name or ISSN in the aforementioned URL

Not every journal listed in journal master list is considered as ISI/WoS. You may see a journal title there, this is because it is only registered in Thomson Reuters and may not be indexed to any of the existing databases. 

I want to know about journals which appear in master journal citation report of Thomson Reuters but doesnot have an impact factor. what does this mean ?

In fact, if someone talks about ISI that mean everything of Web of Science Core.

Master journal list includes: SCI, SCIE, SSCI, AHCI, ESCI. This is a subset of Web of Science.

Web of Science Core Collection includes following citation Indexes:
