In spite of the increased importance of student autonomy and empowerment in the 21st century, little literature seems to be available on the topic. Relatively classical authors such as Rosseau, Dewey, Freire, Bourdieu, Foucault, Rogers, Kolb, and Knowles are useful references, and David Boud’s edited book “Developing Student Autonomy in Learning” (Kogan, 1981/1988) is helpful, but the apparent absence of contemporary research and theory on the topic is puzzling. Does anyone know of any serious work produced in the last decade?

I think it depends on the syllabus which can be changed every now and then.
A term which may help search is "self-regulated learning" instead of "autonomy".

I would also encourage you to investigate Transformative Learning Theory. Developed for adult learning but relevant for younger learners. Mezirow's original theory stems from Critical Theory, so is empowerment-focused in a social sense. John Dirkx, Kasl & Yorks, E.W. Taylor, et al. look at empowerment from different perspectives - Jung, psycho-social, neuroscience - trying to develop a holistic framework. I like TLT because it focuses on the very experience and process of transformative learning (empowering learning) and looks at both the individual and group learning experience.

there has been research on autonomy supportive teacher behavior from Self Determintaion Theory perspective (Deci, Ryan, Reeve, Niemic among others). Perhaps You might find it interesting.
