Christine Porath and Christine Pearson have done some remarkable work in their book, The Cost of Bad Behavior: How Incivility Is Damaging Your Business and What to Do About It.
"What Christine Pearson and Christine Porath write about in this remarkable book reveals how widespread everyday incivilities are and the cost to companies and their employees. They demonstrate with a solid empirical base that one in five people in their sample claimed to be the target of incivility from a coworker at least once a week. About two-thirds told them that they saw incivility occurring among other employees no less than once a month. Ten percent said that they witnessed incivility every single day. They learned that in 2005, 95 percent of the national workforce reported experiences of incivility from coworkers. These events are more than little hurts, irritations; they’re more like little deaths. In fact, the authors report that these everyday, “mundane” slights and disrespect cause stress that costs U.S. companies $ 300 billion a year. - Warren Bennis University of Southern California
