Francesco, you can try with the 'University of Texas at Austin' Library Map Collection. May be you might find what you are looking for. Check attached link.

I would have recommended to take the one from the ESRI site as well... It's a street map (< 1:1,000,000) and topo map (>1:1,000,000) in one!

The 250,000 series at the University of Texas Austin is definitely useful, and the ESRI map is a starting point. Nevertheless, I'm looking for something more detailed (1:25,000-1:50,000). Any other suggestions?

Maybe it is easier to judge whether we can help you, when you specify what exactly should be more detailed (habitats, land cover/use, streets etc.). As the ESRI map is zoomable you can also use it in the range 1:25,000-1:50,000...

I simply need a topographic map of the area, not only with contour lines, but also with names, roads, trails, rivers and so on.

I would also help an aerial photograph with a similar nominal scale (something with a cell resolution of ~1-5 mt would work fine)

A quick update to whoever else happen to need the topographic maps of (northern greece).

There is this cool online resource provided by the University of Plovdiv where you can find 1:50,000 topo maps of the balkans.

The dataset is pretty comprehensive and damn useful. It is centered on Bulgaria, but it also covers (partly) the neighboring countries
