I’d argue that there is not a straightforward answer to this. It is certain that many factors can play an important role in the establishment and support of a rhizospheric microbial community. First thing that comes to mind, is the pH that not only directly (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30302520/) but also indirectly (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19731663/) correlates to the constitution of microbial populations.

Moreover there is extensive literature that correlates temperature (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31830112/), nitrogen application rates (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32563865/), and micronutrient concentration (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34118675/) with microbial populations, sometimes even affecting pathogenic bacteria of the rhizosphere (refer to the aforementioned publication)

Also, I have recently come across this scientific paper (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34668733/) that uses various culture-dependent and independent methods to actually prove that even though many different phyla can be observed through metagenomics, the lack of optimized protocols for their cultivation may significantly cut down the numbers observed. In my opinion, this may indirectly imply that, by extent, the relative populations (but not the existence per se) of the microorganisms in soil are somewhat dependent on its properties.

This discussion is certainly a long one, and my answer barely even scratches the surface of it. Even though attempting to actually pinpoint that correlation can be an arduous task, I reckon the benefits that we, as a scientific community, will gain from this, can be extremely substantial. Once this query is adequately addressed, then manipulating the rhizosphere environment in order to favor specific microbe-host interactions can become a routine-like, parametrized, real-world-application protocol.

While clearly not everything is everywhere - there will be abundant biodiversity in the rhizosphere that could explain what you find within a plant. One would initially expect to find similar strains in the rhizosphere to the endophytes and as such a loose correlation might be made. However, the rhizosphere is a much more dynamic/variable environment than within the plant and that means that what you see there is likely to be different (generalists bacteria versus specialists) . Look at the inoculant literature and patents and perhaps you will find the arguments there. Also imagine that for some plant species - with very high root density that all surface soil is rhizosphere soil. You raise a good question and as such there will be a number of good answers. Enjoy the search and use data to justify your answer accordingly!
