GC is very expensive in Iran, where I am working, so it is not an option for my project. We have a gas sample that includes H2, CH4 and H2O. The quantity of H2 gas is very important to us, and the other gases are not. I want a simple method to measure H2 gas percentage in a gas sample. NB Production of this gas occur in MEC.
If the gas is plentiful use a glass frit to pass the gas through a temperature controlled aqueous dye solution containing a hydrogenation catalyst at a predefined rate and then determine the spectroscopic change of the solution. Any readily reducible dye could be used such as fluorescein or a triphenylmethane dye. The system must first be purged of oxygen. Calibration using known gas mixtures at the same flow rate would be required. Alternatively introduce a known volume of your gas into an oxygen free, temperature and pressure controlled closed system containing a stirred suspension of the solution and catalyst and follow the decrease in light absorption by the dye.
thanks for your help but these methods is very expensive and rare in my country. I want a simple method like a reaction and produced an H2 solution like H2S and titration of that.
It is unclear what part of the method is expensive for you. If you do not have access to hydrogenation catalysts you probably will be unable to make a proper measurement. If you do not have access to a simple visible or fluorescence spectrometer you can visually compare the reduced dye solutions to reference solutions containing different concentrations of the dye or titrate the unreduced dye using borohydride.
