It is said that ASP is an effective program in this era of rapidly growing antimicrobial resistance. It optimizes the management of microbial infections and reduces the chance of developing resistance and adverse events related to antibiotic use. What does it actually mean? How to organize and implement it?
There is a world of literature available on line that will give you an insight into what it is all about. I think you will be highly enlightened by them. It is generally agreed that their be a reduction in the use of antibiotics both in the medical and agricultural sectors. Antibiotic stewardship give the hopeful way forward
For an optimally functional ASP, I believe you need the following
- The hospital is accredited by a high rank accreditation commission
- Total Patient care, laboratory, pharmacy, Infection Control, Quality & Patient Safety and bed management modules are all functional and integrated within the HIS of the institute
- A representative of each of the above departments should be actively involved in planning, implementing and monitoring of ASP

I guess it's a question of what resources you have at your disposal. At Gold Coast Health (my previous employer), we were lucky to have a lot of resources, staff and money to invest in programs. So recently I spearheaded a web-app to help people make decisions around appropriate use of antibiotics. For academic purposes, you can have a look at it (www.gchdecide.com), but it only has ethics approval & governance for clinical use at Gold Coast Health. In a more resource-restricted setting, simple posters, emails or even survey-based research around prescribing habits, can draw people's attention to the issue. Multi-modal education is also another cost-effective measure (but variably effective). Hope this helps.

There should be an ASP policy based on national antibiotic guidelines where local microbial patterns and resistance patterns are considered properly. Physicians prescribing behaviour is a worthy consideration and of utmost importance.
