It has to do with withstanding sudden impact , So need to weigh Amount of energy absorbed before failure. (You mentioned of no mass criterion or brittleness criterion here!). And also being not softened or evaporated by strike can be yet another condition. You may consider area under the stress-strain curve as yet another (rough) measure (But are you considering economics?)
Diamond fracture toughness is around 2 MPa-m^0.5, W has 8-30 MPa-m^0.5 and Ti 28-200 MPa m^0.5. Diamond may be very hard, but it can shatter even if hit strongly with an ordinary hammer. SO you are left with titanium or tungsten. At hotter temperature tungsten gets tougher, but volatile tungsten oxides can be problematic. Titanium flakes also tend to be oxidized violently in Air. For overally ductility, among metals, I would prefer titanium. You may reinforce with other oxides or intermetallic particles as well, or you may consider any polymer-matrix composits or ceramic-martix composites, or even metal-matrix composite as well. First two would be lighter.
You may delve into physics of Toughness and Fracture toughness (and especially strain energy releave vs surface energy creation by cracking and stress concentration at crack tip) if you want.
your answer of this question is appreciated. Diamond is highest scratch resistant materials. Diamond can not be cut by tungsten or titanium blade, rather than this diamond can be cut by another diamond blade. Think reinforcement of diamond how suitable with PMC, FRP, CMC, MMC or not applicable at all with compatibility in this case rather than diamond cladding or if cladding done what consequences in characterization feature impedes with electron motion to the crystal level molecular symmetry of matrix unit chemistry? Many dimensional ways answers are quite possible. Thank you.
I was awaiting to receive a keen reply on conceived question.
