We synthesized metal and its oxide nanoparticles using plant-derived extract as a reducing agent without adding any surfactant. Highly crystalline NPs have formed as inferred from XRD and other characterizations. SEM and TEM showed that the formed nanoparticles, after calcination, are getting aggregated. How can we best prevent the particles from getting aggregated? Is the use of surfactants the only way to prevent aggregation?

The extract contains many organic substances that can be ballast. When heated, they turn into amorphous carbon. This carbon combines nanoparticles. Therefore, after synthesis, it is necessary to wash the nanoparticles from the reducing agent and ballast in a centrifuge. The residue can then be removed by pyrolysis or used with a small amount of stabilizer if it remains on the surface of the nanoparticles.

Generally, the maximum number of nanoparticles will undergo aggregation mainly after annealing the sample. As Yuri Sir explained organic substances which contain more number of carbon are responsible for aggregation. So try wash as much as possible for iron nanomaterial its difficult to avoid aggregation.

To keep them nano then keep them in suspension. You’ve calcined the material and irreversibly formed aggregates. There’s no going back.. Sonic action can disrupt loose agglomerates but not chemically bound aggregates.

We are testing the nanoparticles for biomedical applications. We will try the suggested methods to prevent nanoparticle aggregation and would share the details if it works. Hope the overall process doesn't affect the physicochemical properties of the synthesized molecules.
