Muayyad - A researcher should spend a great deal of time refining a research idea into an examinable research question, statement or hypothesis. The same should be true for graduate students looking to begin this process. Research problems should indicate that practical experience and a critical appraisal of the scientific literature or interest in untested theory have provided the basis for the generation of a research idea. The problem statement should reflect a refinement of the researcher’s initial thinking. To convince reviewers and editors that their study is publishable, graduate students should demonstrate that they have:
• defined a specific problem area
• reviewed the relevant literature
. highlighted the potential significance of the problem
. and examined the feasibility of studying the research problem.
While I agree with Dean mostly I also differ greatly. in my approach to advice. I always have them make two lists rathere quickly i,e off the top of there head. The first is what do you like, makes you feel good, why you choose nursing. The seond is what are you corious about, what are you woundering about, what frightens you.
Now rank them from least to first. Take the top three from each list and write them doen. Now rank them again from least to first.
What comes out is what they are passionitate about. This has worked well for me and makes for well researched, well writen, and and motovated young adults which mostly translates into the best they can do.
I never worry about the overcrowding in the literature, they can be taken care of in the in the approach or angle they take. For me it is what they are passionate about which in the long run makes for beeter nurses. Comming from a mother who was a nurse and a sister who is, is what makes for great nurses.
