this is a very important question .. we're not doing research for the sake of research but for a purpose .. so my advise is to have a look first to the national research priorities then to go back to the institutional or organization priorities to make their topic relevant and significant .. to try to identify the gap/s in the available knowledge then they will be able to determine at least one area needs for exploration
This is essential question that all researchers should consider.
There are several sources for choosing our research topic including literature, clinical and academic experiences, ideas from colleagues in the field, innovate ideas and so on.
Then what source of these is suitable. I think the research experience of the author will determine this issue. To illustrate, those who are still beginner in the research field (like master and doctoral students) should rely on the previous literature. On the other hand, those who have long experience in the research field as professors (like you!!) should add something innovative and brand new ideas to the existing knowledge.
I think that most students in a graduate studies are influenced by their professors' ideas, & interests'.
Therefore, my advice is to think like their professors interests, we know that our professors really done a good job in improving the nursing profession by expanding knowledge and improving the nursing reputation among many other disciplines, and to start in the point that he/she think that will be succeeded on it. this is my perspective.
A good research topic generate from your practice, experience and observation.Definitely not some others experience.Try to practice traditional and start questioning .Read researches and its findings.
it is researchable e.g. data availability, technological viability, methodologically feasible etc.
there is a clear research gaps e.g. area under research, area with conflicting views / theories / experimental results or inconclusive results etc.
you have resources to complete e.g time, financial, lab equipment etc.
you are not reinventing the wheel - performing rigorous literature review, attending research conferences / colloquiums, participating in social networking e.g. ResearchGate, Academia etc. can help
Obviously the engineers should provide solutions for the societal problems.
The research problems may be chosen for addressing the societal problems like environmental issues, energy crisis and on the specific areas like alternate energy, identifying suitable materials for the energy efficient building etc.
Ultimately the research should be based on the interest of the researcher as told by Hang Ping Fung.
