It depends on your hypothesis, the design of the study and on your species. For instance, are the enrichments added across several sessions or a single session? Is there a danger of triggering neophobia or over-arousal in the control group? How are they being introduced to the study group does the control methodology match? Can you control or are you prepared to account for different reactions to the enrichment by individual subjects across both groups as per the above (neophobia and over-arousal)? Is there a danger of resource-guarding or other form of aggressive behaviour?
