PhD in UK and other countries depends on your background in a study field, so that when a student apply to phd study, he should preper a proposal research. While for the type of course-research the student improve his knowledge and can make a background during the study courses. So, we cannon say which type of study is better than the other. Some student need to take courses to be able conduct the PhD study, other can start direct doing research.

Perhaps one of the good things about doing a PhD by coursework is that you will be 'equipped' with important aspects of the research that you plan to do such as theoretical knowledge etc.

Paul: I am not sure if one method is better than the other, but I think the combination of teaching & research prepares the PhD student to teach some day. If all you do is research without any teaching, then you may become an excellent researcher but a poor teacher. If you might teach college some day in the future, then it is better to be exposed to teaching methods and styles as a PhD student. On the other hand, if you have no desire to ever teach college and all you want to do is conduct research, then you don't need to be exposed to PhD level teaching. This is just my opinion, of course.

In the end, PhD is recognized by the thesis, which will be read and referred by many researchers. So that, the main goal of Ph.D degree is doing a great research. While the role of courses is just improving your background.
