Open access publication is very useful for readers as they are free to everyone. But as an author, for research students like me, the OA publication charges are too high. So I prefer the subscription mode.

Open access on ScienceDirect has a free to access for everyone. The open access landscape now incorporates open data, and most policies about Open Access publications are being expanded to include open data requirements. Articles published in Open Access may have more citations because they are open to all.

Open access didn't mean that the article will be accepted, its option to increase your article citation.

Good morning.

We as a researchers have to well distinguish between the so called predatory journals (usually open access journals with publication fees of about up to 300$), (for more information about this topic please follow Prof. Jeffry Beal's list) and the trusted and indexed open access journals (usually with publication fees of about 2000$), so here we are standing in front of two roads, either following fake journals (predatory) but with very low fees (in this case we will face no citations, no actual scientific reputation, ...etc) or following a trusted journals under well-known publisher like the Elsevier, IEEE, Springer, ....etc but with very expensive publishing fees and in many universities this amount will be paid by the university itself.

Researchers can also follow archiving of research papers into institutional repository in support of open access movement. Researchers who publish their research output in reputed high impact journals, can also archive pre-prints/post-prints or publishers’ pdf version of articles into their institutional repository. Database of publishers, who allows archiving of research papers into institutional repository can be accessed through SHERPA/RoMEO Project, a JISC funded project at the University of Loughborough.

Elsevier is an excellent publisher, but I choose not to use the open access option and therefore pay no fee to get things published with them.
