Actually we all have cancer cells insie our body!!When these cells start growing more n more,we get the symptoms for disease cancer. The Normal Cells contain Glucose which is sucked by these canciferous cells and due to this the patient gets tired often and dies after some years inspite of good treatments. Now when this 2DG cells are injected, these cells containing artificial glucose tends to make the canciferous cells tired.Because the cancer cells thinking that 2DG cells contain original glucose try 2 absorb glucose from them without knowing this is an artificial one.Hence the cancer cells become extremely tired and when the patient sits for chemotherapy, the cells are killed with much ease than before and the number of sittings also gest reduced.
@ketaki : Malignant cells has shown greater sensitivity to glucose deprivation induced cytotoxicity/killing than normal cells which had been demonstrated in number of mouse models. This could be one of the reason for your question.
it is well known the higher dependence on glucse of the more undifferenciated and faster growing cancer cell types but cancer is a very heterogeneos disease and such type of treatment could erradicate some cells but not others (like the so called cancer stem cells) that can ultimatelly reproduce the cancer growth again...in general we should avoid or look very carefully about news on new drugs or kind of treatment that kills cancer cells in a general way.
Kritika..ur answer was exact for this !! And Ricardo , Many new drugs are being discovered for the treatment of this dreadful disease...The Stem cells comes in to picture over here and helps the researchers the most and will be a boon to the man kind!!!
Adenovirus Therapy can assist your research ... I think 2D Glucose can transferred to cancer cell more effectively from this adenovirus (modified by synthetic biology) treatments (as they will attack only Cancer Cells).
Adenovirus has natural tendency to attract towards cancers cells. With the help of synthetic biology we can design such Genetic circuits which can only express only in Cancer Cells. Now this modified adenovirus is injected inside body. It will express only in desire cancer cells. Hence there is very less chance of infection to Normal Cells.
Adenovirus are good way for transfering genetic material ( such as normal variants of genes that are defectve in some cancer cells- tumor supressor genes- but not to deliver this kind of therapy
@Ricardo Sánchez-Escribano ... u r right .. we can not transfer direct 2D glucose through Adenovirus .. but we can transfer mutated hexokinase inducers genes ( eg. Gene producing 17 beta-estradiol for uterine cancer) .. which will leads to high utilization of 2D glucose ... which may effective than present therapy ....
I want to ask some questions ... Which Cell Line u r using for this experiment ? and What is average cost of experiment ?? ( I know 'Cost' question is somewhat vague ... But I have interest to bring such project to our college ... so it will help me .. :) ]
